Welfare Reform Seminar

The reforms to the welfare system are amongst the biggest issues facing local authorities and theircommunities. The Seminar on the 1 March 2013 gave us an opportunity totake a step back and consider an overview of the position, and to hear from a number of speakers who are involved in the implementation of the changes and in assessing their impact.

The Government's welfare reforms will have far-reaching impacts on individuals, on the local economy and on councils' own finances. It is estimated that over half the households in the North East will be affected in some way by th ereforms. Some households may suffer a reduction in income; some may find their present accommodation is no longer affordable, and this could have knock-on impacts on a whole range of issues and services.

Speakers from a local authority perspective, advice services, housing and academia contributed to an excellent seminar programme which discussed and debated key issues and will help inform a North East wide research project on welfare reforms that has been commissioned by all 12councils.
