The North East has two ports of national strategic importance.

Teesport is the second largest port in the UK handling more approximately 40 million tonnes of freight. The deep sea container facility at Teesport is important not only to the North East but to the North and nationally with enormous potential for opening up and expanding trade from Asia, particularly China.

The Port of Tyne is a deep river port with an international passenger terminal offereing ferries and cruises and freight services including two car terminals and a rail terminal with links to the East Coast Mainline.

Promoting the maritime sector

ANEC promotes the maritime sector by making the case for North East ports to play a greater role in meeting the UK's transport needs. By making better use of their capacity balanced growth across the country will be promoted.
