Supporting councils to address climate change
Local government action to address climate change, reduce carbon emissions and to promote energy efficiency is crucial.
All 12 North East councils have given cross-party political support to reduce carbon emissions by at least 20% by 2020. We were the first region in Europe to sign up to the EU Covenant of Mayors which commits us to increasing energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources and the councils have produced sustainable energy action plans that detail how they will achieve this.
Councils are also working with individuals and communities to encourage behavioural change and practical measures that will reduce energy use and strengthen the resilience of local services and local communities to extreme weather.
ANEC represents the North East's local authorities on Climate North East, the partnership which aims to tackle the causes and effects of climate change in this part of the country.
