Towards a low carbon economy

The North East is ambitious to be a world leader in new and renewable energy industries and our 12 local authorities agree that the development of new green industries is a key part of a sustainable and prosperous future.

Local government has an important leadership role in tackling the causes and effects of climate change and councils are making a significant contribution by reducing carbon emissions from their own estate and operations, and are using their influence and powers to reduce carbon emissions from people's homes, businesses and transport by supporting renewable energy generation.

We are also committed to addressing the energy efficiency of housing and to tackling fuel poverty which contribute to health and wellbeing and a low carbon future.
