Councillor Bill Dixon, Vice Chair, Association of North East Councils (Labour)
Councillor Bill Dixon was elected as Vice Chair of the Association of North East Councils on 12 July 2013.
Councillor Dixon was first elected as a Darlington Councillor in 1979 and served as Deputy Leader from 1991-2011.
In 2011, he was awarded an MBE for services to local government. The award not only acknowledged his years in public service, but his efforts to significantly reduce crime across the Borough. Councillor Dixon represents Darlington on Regional and Tees Valley Bodies, including Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU); Vice Chair of Tees Valley LEP; Durham Tees Valley Airport Board; Local Government Association (LGA) and Darlington Partnership. He also represents the Authority on a number of outside bodies.
At Darlington Borough Council he has served as Chair of Housing, Chair of Social Services and Vice Chair of Policy & Resources. From 1999 to 2012 he served on the Durham Police Authority.
Councillor Dixon worked in the engineering industry, where he served as Shop Steward, District Delegate and Branch Secretary for the AEUW. In 1979 he was awarded a Ruskin Scholarship but decided to accept a place at Durham University as an undergraduate in order to remain as a Councillor. Following this he attended the University of Newcastle as a graduate student. Councillor Dixon holds a BA (Hons.) from Durham and MPhil from Newcastle.
